hi mrs. shabana! lks like the podcast has been postponed!lool.well, it was a long night with extremely heavy rain which saved us from today's Math chapter test :P.here, i managed to write the summary
today. hope it's sufficient and helpful:
in the first chapter, we are introduced by the setting and the atmosphere of the story. a war takes place in south London .Hilda tries to find a place for her and her 9-years old daughter,Ellen, away from the bombs which caused Hilda's husband to go and fight at the war.we are introduced by the first event which is the death of hilda's parents when being crushed by thier house.since then, Hilda felt lonely and tried to manage getting away from her devastated home as quickly as possible.having nowhere to go, hilda and her little Ellen stayed with an old friend, mabel.in the mean time, hilda sought evacutating her daughter to a companion she's known long time ago rather than sending her to a stranger. Finally, Hilda decided to leave with Ellen and go to gertie, her old mate.the relationship btw. Hilda and Gertie has been obvious in the last pages of the third chapter. we know that Hilda's mother worked for Gertie's father and was a friendly to gertie who lost her mother.in one way or another, hilda seemed inferior to gertie when describing gerie's home as a palace compared to hers.in conclusion, Ellen is elated by gertie's animals and comforted by the place and her mother's presence...
Actually, i don't think that Hilda felt or seemed inferior to Gertie on the contrary, they both became friends.Anyway, your summary is really good!!!:)
ReplyDeletehilda feeled inferior to gertie when they were young girls because hilda's mother worked at gertie's house which made her feel worthless.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, Gertie's snobbish behavior also made Hilda feel uncomfortable and subordinate.
However, Gertie and Hilda managed tobecome good friends and Gertie showed that when she agreed to have them stay at her not-so-fancy house.
I dont think Hilda feels inferior now because she says that gertie's farm-like house is small compared to what theirs use to be, which actually made her feel worse knowing that it's ruins now ...
Yea areej, Gertie's father's house was fancy, not Gertie's house. Hilda said that her house was surprisingly fancier than Getie's.
ReplyDeleteAnd i dont think that Hilda felt inferiorated. Her mom worked for Gertie's dad when both girls were young so back then they didn't really bond, but its different now.
Hope you had fun reading the novel :p
Your summary is great. It gives the reader an idea of what really happened throughout the first 3 chapters without reading them.
ReplyDeleteYet, I must oppose what you and Rua think, Hilda and Gertie both felt inferior to the other regarding different points. Hilda felt inferior to Gertie when it comes to the palace Gertie lived in. On the other hand, Gertie felt inferior to Hilda, because Hilda had the loving and caring family Gertie always dreamed of instead of how strict Gertie's father was.
Good going guys!
ReplyDeleteGreat summary Areej
ReplyDeleteIf someone didn't read the story she would have easily understand
